Coinbase vs Kraken: Fees, Security & Which Is Better in the USA?

    Fact-checked: September 01, 2026

Kraken and Coinbase are two of the best crypto exchanges in the US, but I would not pick the same one for every type of user. Coinbase is better for beginners who want to buy cryptocurrency instantly with USD, while Kraken is better if you want more advanced trading tools, more order types, and a wider trading setup.

In this guide, I will compare Coinbase vs Kraken based on trading fees, coin selection, security, USD deposit speeds, staking rewards, US futures, and overall ease of use.

My overall winner is Kraken for active traders, but Coinbase is the better choice for a beginner. Also, Coinbase has an advantage for smaller traders after Kraken increased its entry-level trading fees in July 2026.

What Is the Main Difference Between Coinbase and Kraken?

    • Coinbase is a public company. You can buy its stock, ticker COIN, on the Nasdaq. Kraken is still privately owned. It filed to go public in late 2025, but that plan has slipped and may not happen until 2027.
    • Kraken currently does not provide its services to residents of Maine and New York. Coinbase is available in all 50 states, including BitLicense in New York.
    • Kraken now has higher taker fees (0.8% after a recent hike from 0.4%) compared to Coinbase’s taker fee of 0.6%.
    • Kraken offers more advanced tools compared to Coinbase on its “Pro” platform.

    Is Kraken Cheaper Than Coinbase?

No, Kraken is not always cheaper than Coinbase, after its recent “Pro’ platform fee hike in July 2026.

First, most of the new users will use the “Instant Buy” feature on their mobile apps. So, first let’s talk about these fees. Coinbase’s simple Buy and Sell screen can cost you anywhere from 1.49% to 3.99% per trade, depending on how you pay. Debit card purchases sit at the high end of that range.

Kraken shows its “Simple Buy” fees more clearly than Coinbase. Generally, when you buy, sell, or swap crypto instantly on Kraken, you pay a flat 1% fee. Kraken also adds a small spread inside the price you see. Also, if you join Kraken+, the platform drops the 1% fee on your first $10,000 of monthly trades, but you still pay the spread.

Kraken Pro vs Coinbase Advanced Trading Fees

Recently, Kraken changed its fee tiers on July 9, 2026. Now, Kraken Pro starts at a 0.40% maker fee and 0.80% taker fee for its first spot trading tier. Your fee will go down as your 30-day trading volume or assets held on Kraken increase.

Coinbase Advanced uses a maker-taker model as well. The Advanced fees can be up to 0.40% for maker orders and 0.60% for taker orders, with lower rates as your trading volume increases.

    $50,000+0.15% / 0.30%0.15% / 0.25%

    Coinbase vs Kraken Supported Cryptocurrencies

Both platforms list all the major coins you would expect. You can buy Bitcoin ($BTC), Ethereum ($ETH), Solana ($SOL), Cardano ($ADA), and popular stablecoins like $USDC and $USDT on either exchange.

    • Kraken: Lists over 500+ cryptocurrencies. Kraken tends to list established DeFi tokens, gaming coins, and layer-1 networks faster.
    • Coinbase: Lists over 400+ cryptocurrencies. Coinbase follows a strict regulatory review process before listing any coin.

Which Is Safer, Kraken or Coinbase?

Winner: It’s close. Kraken has the stronger transparency track record thanks to Proof of Reserves. Coinbase has stronger public oversight, since it must file audited reports as a Nasdaq-listed company.

    Kraken Security Explained

    • Well, no hack has ever caused a permanent loss of customer funds on Kraken, going back to 2011.
    • It has about 95% of customer crypto sits in offline cold storage wallets.
    • Kraken publishes regular Proof-of-Reserves audits, so you can check that customer coins are actually backed.
    • You get 2FA, passkeys, and hardware security key support.
    • In 2024, a bug let attackers pull about $3 million from Kraken’s own funds, not customer funds. Kraken patched it and recovered most of the money.

    Coinbase Security Explained

    • It’s about 98% of customer crypto sits in cold storage.
    • Coinbase insures the crypto held in its hot wallets against theft, but this doesn’t cover you if your own account gets phished or your password gets stolen.
    • Coinbase files audited financial reports every quarter as a publicly listed company
    • You get 2FA and passkey support as well.
    • In 2025, bribed overseas support agents stole personal data, like names and ID photos, from about 70,000 customers. No passwords or funds were exposed, and Coinbase refused to pay a $20 million ransom.

Which is Better, Coinbase Advanced or Kraken Pro

Kraken Pro gives you more advanced order types, deep charts, and a clean fee structure once you start using limit orders. It also connects directly to Kraken’s futures and margin trading.

Coinbase Advanced is easier to jump into if you already have a Coinbase account. It now covers 500+ trading pairs and includes built-in TradingView charts.

Which Is Better for USD Deposits and Withdrawals?

Both Coinbase and Kraken work well with US bank accounts, and you can fund either exchange through ACH without paying a deposit fee.

    Kraken vs Coinbase Staking

Kraken charges 15% to 30% commission on bonded staking, and the rate drops the more you stake. Flexible staking is a flat 30%. You can stake ETH, SOL, ADA, and more than 20 other coins.

Coinbase charges around 35% commission on most staking assets, including ETH, SOL, ADA, and DOT. Coinbase One members even get a lower rate. This is usually between 26% and 32%, depending on their plan.

Which Exchange Is Easier to Use?

Coinbase is easier to use than Kraken for someone buying crypto for the first time. The sign-up process takes just a few minutes on your phone, identity verification is fast, and the interface looks like Apple Cash or PayPal. You can buy Bitcoin with two taps. You never have to look at an order book or a candlestick chart unless you choose to open Coinbase Advanced.

The standard Kraken web and mobile app is clean and friendly as well. However, Kraken’s product lineup is actually divided between standard Kraken, Kraken Pro, and Kraken Desktop. Sometimes, beginners might feel slightly confused when moving between their simple account balance and the Kraken Pro trading suite. Or else, this is also quite beginner-friendly.

    Coinbase vs Kraken Customer Support

Kraken has the better customer support experience overall, mainly because Coinbase users often report problems getting complex account issues resolved. First, both exchanges obviously offer 24/7 phone support in the USA, live chat, and a support forum.

But here, Coinbase is highly scrutinized for response times and negligence. The issue starts when your account gets restricted, a withdrawal is held, or your case needs a compliance or security review. I also found recent Coinbase users complaining that support agents kept telling them their case was “escalated” to a specialist, but they received no clear update for weeks. Even some users are waiting for over 6 months.

    Which One Should You Use?

    Choose Kraken If You…

    • Trade regularly and want lower spread for “Simple Buy”
    • Want to use Kraken Pro’s advanced tools
    • Care about Proof-of-Reserves and a clean security record
    • Want a wider staking selection with lower commissions
    • Want crypto and traditional futures in one account

    Choose Coinbase If You…

    • Are buying crypto for the first time.
    • Want a simpler mobile app and buying process.
    • Live in New York or Maine, where Kraken currently does not serve residents.
    • Make low-volume market trades and want lower starting taker fees.
    • Want easy ACH deposits and withdrawals.
    • Prefer a US public company with detailed public financial reporting.

    My Final Verdict

Kraken is my overall choice for an active crypto trader, while Coinbase is the better exchange for a beginner. Actually, you can choose a better option like:

    • Best overall: Kraken
    • Best for beginners: Coinbase
    • Best for active trading: Kraken
    • Best for simple crypto purchases: Coinbase
    • Best for low-volume Advanced market trades: Coinbase

    Coinbase vs Kraken FAQs

    Is Kraken Better Than Coinbase?

Kraken is better than Coinbase for advanced trading, staking choices, Proof of Reserves, and more complex order types. Coinbase is better if you want a simpler platform or live in a US state where Kraken is not available.

Can I Use Both Coinbase and Kraken in the USA?

Yes, most US residents can use both Coinbase and Kraken. Kraken currently does not serve residents of Maine and New York, and some products have extra state restrictions.

Which Exchange Has Lower Withdrawal and Network Fees?

Neither Kraken nor Coinbase is always cheaper for crypto withdrawals because the fee changes by coin and blockchain network. But again, according to recent public Coinbase vs Kraken reviews, Coinbase is generally criticized for high withdrawal fees.

Are Kraken and Coinbase Fully Compliant With US Regulations?

Yes, both Kraken and Coinbase operate regulated businesses in the US, but there is no single federal “crypto exchange license” that makes an exchange fully licensed for every product and state.

Coinbase holds money-transmitter and other required state licenses across the US, while different Coinbase entities handle products such as securities and derivatives. The same goes for Kraken as well.

Can You Trade Traditional Stocks on Kraken or Coinbase?

Yes, you can now trade real US stocks and ETFs on both Kraken and Coinbase. Kraken offers US users access to 11,000+ stocks and ETFs through Kraken Securities LLC, with zero-commission stock trading. Coinbase also now lets US users trade thousands of US stocks and ETFs after opening a Coinbase Capital Markets brokerage account.

What Is the Kraken 72-Hour Rule vs. Coinbase Deposit Holds?

Kraken can place a 72-hour withdrawal hold after PayPal deposits, debit/credit card purchases, digital-wallet purchases, and certain first-time instant purchases. You can still trade during the hold, but you cannot withdraw the equivalent amount in cash or crypto. Kraken’s ACH Plaid deposits have a longer 7-day withdrawal hold.

Coinbase works differently. A bank deposit may become available for trading immediately, but you cannot withdraw the deposited amount until Coinbase actually receives the money from your bank. Well, this normally takes around 3–5 days, and the hold cannot be manually shortened
