    Verdict: My Kraken Review

Kraken is a safe and legitimate crypto exchange for most users, and I found no fair reason to call it a scam. The company has operated since 2011, serves millions of clients, and reports more than $2 trillion in total transaction volume. It also holds licenses or registrations in the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and other markets.

Plus, the exchange has never suffered an exchange breach that caused a loss of client funds. So, those points give it one of the stronger records among large cryptocurrency trading platforms.

Still, in my opinion, Kraken cryptocurrency exchange is not perfect. Its basic Instant Buy service can cost much more than Kraken Pro, even the new entry-level Kraken Pro taker fee is now 0.80%, and several products remain limited or unavailable for U.S. customers.

    What is Kraken Exchange?

    Kraken crypto exchange

Kraken is a U.S.-based crypto exchange for buying, selling, trading, staking, and transferring crypto and other supported assets. The legal company behind much of the group is Payward. Well, Kraken Exchange was founded in 2011 and opened trading in 2013. It now offers a simple app, Kraken Pro, a desktop terminal, OTC trading, futures in supported markets, staking, and selected stock products.

    • The simple app is mainly best for people who want to buy Bitcoin or another coin without reading an order book.
    • Kraken Pro is good for active traders who want limit orders, live market depth, chart tools, APIs, and lower transaction costs than the simple purchase screen.

You do not need a second account for Kraken Pro. The same verified Kraken account can access both products, although certain tools depend on your country, state, verification level, and financial eligibility. It supports spot trading, recurring buys, margin for eligible users, regional derivatives, OTC trading, staking, and crypto transfers.

Kraken serves more than 190 countries and markets, but that number does not mean every resident can sign up. The prohibited list includes India, Japan, Russia, the Philippines, Iran, North Korea, and other places. U.S. access also changes by state.

Here is a quick Kraken review/overview:

Kraken Cryptocurrency Company Review (Brand Reputation)

Kraken has a strong crypto brand, but yes, its reputation is also not perfect. First, the exchange has been operating since 2011, so it has survived several full market cycles, including major crashes and the failures of other large platforms.

    Kraken Cryptocurrency Company Review

They have more than $2 trillion in total trading volume over the years. In 2025, their revenue was $2.2 billion, which is 33% higher than the year before. Also, their adjusted EBITDA was $531 million, up 26%. Hence, these numbers show that Kraken is actually a huge, busy trading platform, not just a small company that uses fake marketing.

Now, to be honest, I really like that Kraken shares clear pages for fees, legal rules, and security. They do a much better job than other crypto exchanges when they show what features work in each country. Still, the whole setup feels a bit confusing because they use different Payward and Kraken companies for different parts of the world. But again, that’s a legal requirement, so I will not question that.

The biggest problem with their Kraken brand reputation happened recently in April 2026. Basically, the two insider events leaked support data from around 2,000 accounts. That is about 0.02% of all their users. The exchange’s main systems were safe, and no customer money was in danger. Also, Kraken sent messages to the users who had this problem, put in better security rules, and worked with law enforcement after an extortion attempt.

Kraken Crypto Trading Review: Top Features Explained

Kraken exchange gives active crypto traders one of the broadest tool sets among large U.S.-based exchanges. Yes, the exact mix depends on location, but the global platform actually has spot trading, margin, derivatives, earning tools, OTC service, APIs, and a full desktop app.

    1. Spot trading: Kraken Pro supports market, limit, stop-loss, take-profit, and other order types across hundreds of assets and many fiat pairs.
    2. Margin trading: Well, not all, but eligible users can also trade selected markets with up to 20x leverage. You can borrow funds from the exchange, actually.
    3. Futures and derivatives: Kraken crypto exchange offers more than 300 contracts in supported non-U.S. markets. Remember, U.S. clients get a separate regulated route through Kraken Derivatives US and NinjaTrader.
    4. Kraken Desktop: The Windows, macOS, and Linux terminal supports multi-window layouts, order-book ladders, charts, alerts, and more than 600 markets.
    5. APIs: You can use REST, WebSocket, and FIX connections support bots, data tools, and larger trading systems.
    6. OTC trading: The over-the-counter desk handles orders above $50,000 and provides direct quotes away from the public order book.
    7. Stocks and tokenized stocks: Once again, not all, but eligible users can trade more than 11,000 U.S. stocks and ETFs through supported Kraken services. xStocks offer tokenized exposure to selected shares outside the United States, with separate risks and rules. xStocks are not available to U.S. clients.

    Instant Buy vs. Kraken Pro

Well, Kraken Pro is usually the better choice for lower-cost trading, while Instant Buy is easier for beginners for a first purchase using fiat currencies.

    FeatureKraken Instant BuyKraken Pro
Best forBeginners and fast fiat-to-crypto purchasesRegular traders and cost-focused users

Order typesBasic buy, sell, recurring, and custom ordersMarket, limit, stop-loss, take-profit, and advanced orders

    Kraken Earn Review

Kraken Earn is actually a staking service for eligible users who want passive rewards without managing validators or complex on-chain steps. Currently, the service includes bonded staking, flexible staking, Auto Earn, and some region-specific reward programs.

Earn optionWhat you getMain point to check
Flexible stakingRewards with easier access to the assetThe rate is often lower than bonded staking
Bonded stakingA possible higher reward rateUnbonding can take days or weeks
Auto EarnEligible idle assets can start earningAsset support and Kraken’s commission vary
USDG rewardsUp to 2% APY normally or up to 4.25% with Kraken+Region limits apply, and USDG is not a bank deposit
DeFi EarnAccess to selected onchain earning marketsSmart-contract, market, and protocol risks apply
    Kraken Earn staking review

Note: Kraken’s U.S. staking currently offers only 17 supported assets, including ETH, SOL, DOT, and ADA. Plus, U.S. clients also do not get the same Opt-In Rewards program offered in some other regions.

    Mobile App Usability

Kraken crypto exchange has two mobile apps, and they actually work well for both beginners and pro traders. The basic Kraken app is very simple. You can use it to buy crypto easily, set up recurring buys, track your wallet, and even invest in stocks. But now, if you want more advanced tools, the Kraken Pro app gives you full charts, order books, margin trading, and extra order types.

You see, having two different apps might feel a bit strange when you start. But after you use them for a little bit, it makes a lot of sense because each app is made for a different kind of trader. You do not need to make a new account either. You can just use the exact same login details to switch between the simple app and the Pro app.

    Kraken pro mobile app review

Right now, the app ratings are really good. In the U.S., on the Apple App Store, both Kraken and Kraken Pro have a high score of 4.7 out of 5 stars. On the Google Play Store, the main app has a 4.3 rating, and the Pro app has a 4.6 rating.

Kraken Security Features: Is Kraken Safe?

Kraken crypto exchange is one of the most secure crypto exchanges right now. Well, it uses a mix of hot and cold wallet storage, encrypted data, monitored physical facilities, role-based staff access, and regular testing. It also holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification and has completed a SOC 2 Type 1 review.

The most useful account controls include:

    • Passkeys or two-factor authentication for sign-in and important actions.
    • A Global Settings Lock that can block account changes for a chosen period.
    • A separate Master Key that helps protect sensitive settings and recovery steps.
    • New withdrawal-address confirmation by email.
    • Custom API key permissions and withdrawal limits.
    • PGP-signed and encrypted email support for users who want it.
    • Session and device monitoring so you can remove access you do not know.
    • A public bug bounty that pays researchers for valid security findings.

    Regulations and Compliance

The Kraken trading platform operates through regulated companies in major markets, which makes it a very legitimate cryptocurrency exchange rather than an anonymous website.

The main current registrations and licenses include:

    • United States: It has state money-transmitter licenses and related registrations. Kraken Financial is a Wyoming-chartered special purpose depository institution. It received limited access to a Federal Reserve master account as well.
    • European Economic Area: Payward Global Solutions Limited (Kraken legal name) is an electronic money institution. It also holds MiCA crypto-asset service provider permissions from the Central Bank of Ireland.
    • United Kingdom: Kraken companies hold Financial Conduct Authority registrations for supported crypto and payment work.
    • Canada: Payward Canada is registered as a restricted dealer with securities regulators.
    • Australia: Local services use AUSTRAC registration, and derivatives activity uses an Australian financial services license.

    Kraken Restricted Countries

The Kraken cryptocurrency exchange currently does not serve clients or permit cash and crypto deposits from the following regions:

    • Afghanistan
    • Belarus
    • Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions of Ukraine
    • Cuba
    • Democratic Republic of the Congo
    • India
    • Iran

    Kraken Crypto Exchange Fees Review

Kraken crypto exchange fees are quite high compared to the industry standard (0.1% per trade), and after the recent hike, they are even higher than Coinbase exchange.

    Instant Buy Charges

Kraken cryptocurrency exchange charges a 1% trading fee on instant and recurring trades and a 1.5% fee on custom orders. There is also additional spread, which can be up to 0.5% per trade.

Zero Trading Fees: Kraken+ members enjoy zero trading fees on up to $10,000 USD (or the local currency equivalent) in monthly trading volume for major currencies (USD, GBP, CAD, AUD, EUR, CHF).

    Kraken Pro Fees

The spot entry-level taker fee rose to 0.80%. The rate falls as your rolling 30-day trading volume or eligible asset balance rises.

How much does Kraken charge for crypto withdrawals?

Kraken charges a fixed crypto withdrawal fee that changes by asset and network. There is no single percentage that covers Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, stablecoins, and every token. But, during my Kraken exchange review, I found that these fees are also high compared to network fees on other exchanges like Binance, MEXC, and Bybit.

How Many Cryptocurrencies Does Kraken Support?

Kraken supports about 600 crypto assets on its global Pro platform. The public tradable-asset count can move by one or more coins as Kraken lists, limits, or removes markets.

The number inside your Kraken account may be much lower, as U.S., Canadian, EEA, Australian, and other local rules block selected assets or services. So, one asset may support buying but not staking, margin, futures, or transfers in your region.

Next, Kraken gets strong app-store ratings but a more mixed score on Trustpilot. Actually, that gap is common for financial platforms because happy mobile users rate the app, while people with a frozen transfer or long support case often post on complaint sites.

Kraken Drawbacks: What It Can Do to Improve

Kraken’s main drawbacks are higher small-trader costs, uneven regional access, and support cases that can take too long. The platform has grown beyond crypto into stocks, payments, and derivatives, yet basic issues still matter more to most users.

    1. More Fiat Currencies and Bank Withdrawals

Kraken exchange needs to add more local currencies and better direct bank withdrawal choices for users in different countries. Right now, the platform only takes 9 fiat currencies for deposits: USD, EUR, CAD, AUD, GBP, CHF, ARS, BRL, and MXN. Well, this list works for big countries, but also, it means a lot of other users have to change their money first using another bank, a debit card, stablecoins, or a different crypto exchange.

Now, for users in the U.S., you can only deposit USD using the local network. Also, if you live in Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, or Utah, you will face extra limits on moving your cash.

Bank deposit and withdrawal methods change a lot depending on where you live too. A payment option that costs nothing and takes just a few minutes in one country might not even be available in another place.

So, I would say, if Kraken cryptocurrency exchange adds more local bank connections in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, it would really help users save money on exchange fees and avoid failed transfers.

India is a great example of this problem. This is the country with the second-highest crypto users in the world. Right now, Kraken completely blocks the whole country, so if you live in India, you cannot open an account or use it like a normal crypto exchange at all.

    2. Lower Trading Fees

Kraken should lower its entry-level taker fee and make Instant Buy less costly. A 0.80% starting taker fee on Kraken Pro is high beside several direct rivals, and the 1% Instant Buy fee comes before the spread or payment charge. A $5,000 instant order can therefore carry a $50 trading fee before those extras.

Note: If you want the lowest-fee exchanges, check out our guide on the best crypto exchanges with low fees…

    3. Unavailability of Most Features in the U.S. Market

Kraken offers a useful U.S. exchange, but yes, American clients miss several global features or even face state limits.

To start with, xStocks are not available in the United States. Opt-In Rewards are also unavailable; normal Rewards access covers only selected states, and some tokens have transfer or trading limits.

New York and Maine residents cannot use the standard service.

U.S. users do have spot trading, eligible staking, supported margin access, and regulated CME crypto futures through the U.S. derivatives setup. The problem is not that Kraken offers almost nothing. The problem is that a global product page can show a feature that disappears after location checks.

User Experience & Customer Support: Is It Easy to Use For Beginners?

Kraken crypto exchange is simple enough for a beginner if you start with the basic app. Now, when you sign up, the platform asks for your personal details, a photo ID, and sometimes extra papers to prove your address or where your money comes from. The verification can finish very fast, but if your details do not match or if the system flags your account, you might have to wait for a long manual review.

The normal app is easy to use with clear buttons for buying, selling, depositing, and withdrawing, and setting up recurring buys is also very simple. The Kraken Pro app has a lot more settings, so I would suggest not touching leverage trading until you really understand the risks.

Next, their customer support works 24/7 through live chat and tickets, and they even have phone support for some cases. Now, if you look at Kraken reviews online, some people get their problems fixed fast, while others have to wait for weeks. Also, the basic chat agents usually cannot tell you anything if your account is stuck in a compliance review.

New users often get surprised by deposit holds as well. Generally, if you use ACH deposits through Plaid, Kraken can put a 7-day hold on withdrawing those funds. Buying crypto with a debit card, PayPal, or digital wallets can also trigger a 72-hour hold for that same amount of money. You can still trade during this hold time, but you cannot move that money out of the platform.

Anyway, you can avoid most beginner mistakes if you make sure your bank account name matches your Kraken account name perfectly, read the hold warnings carefully, and test the system with a small deposit first. And never trust anyone who sends you a private message claiming to be Kraken support.

How Kraken Stacks Up vs. [Coinbase, Robinhood, and Gemini]

Kraken competes well with major U.S. exchanges, but it does not win every category. Coinbase Advanced has a lower entry taker fee, Robinhood gives stock investors a simpler all-in-one app, and Gemini remains available in markets where Kraken has state limits (like New York). Conclusion: Kraken Cryptocurrency Exchange Review

To sum up my Kraken crypto exchange review, it is a legitimate and secure exchange with excellent trading tools, a large global crypto list, and a better record than most platforms of the same age. So, yes, it is not a scam, and its licenses, public leadership, reserve checks, long operating history, and strong account controls support that view.

The main concerns are equally clear: small Kraken Pro traders now pay up to 0.80% as takers at the entry tier, Instant Buy adds a 1% fee plus spread, and U.S. customers face important state and product restrictions.

My final Kraken rating is 8.5 out of 10. Kraken is best for users who care more about security, asset choice, withdrawals, staking, and advanced tools than having the lowest possible beginner fee.

    FAQs: Kraken Review

Is Kraken a good crypto exchange?

Kraken is a really good crypto exchange if you care a lot about high security, having many different coins to choose from, and advanced trading tools.

It gives you a simple app if you just want to buy crypto, the Kraken Pro app for active trading, staking rewards in countries where it is allowed, APIs, an OTC desk, and fiat trading pairs. Because the platform has been around for a long time, it has earned a lot more trust than new exchanges.

Is Kraken exchange safe and a legit site?

Yes, Kraken is a safe and legitimate exchange. It operates through registered and licensed entities, uses strong account controls, publishes proof of reserves data, and has served clients since 2013.

What are the pros and cons of Kraken crypto?

The main good things about Kraken are its really strong security, having around 600+ different crypto assets globally, advanced tools for trading, several choices for fiat currencies, staking rewards, and the fact that it has been around for a long time.

Now, on the bad side, the main issues are the 0.80% taker fee when you start out on the Pro app, a 1% fee for Instant Buy plus the spread, limits based on your country or specific state, unexpected holds on your deposits, and customer support that can sometimes be very hit or miss.

    Is Kraken Pro a scam?

Obviously “No”. Kraken Pro is not a scam. It is Kraken’s official advanced trading platform and uses the same verified account, balances, and security system as the normal Kraken service. You can reach it through Kraken’s official site or verified Kraken Pro app.

    How reliable is Kraken?

Kraken is generally reliable for trading and custody, based on its operating record of 14 years, scale, security controls, and app ratings. The exchange says it has handled more than $2 trillion in transactions, and the mobile apps hold strong average scores.

Is Kraken available in the U.S. and Europe?

Kraken is available across most of the United States and much of Europe, but local restrictions apply. First, U.S. residents of New York and Maine cannot use Kraken, and other states may limit staking, rewards, margin, derivatives, or specific coins. Next, EEA operations run under Kraken’s Irish MiCA authorization, though local product and stablecoin limits can still apply.

    Who is Kraken best for?

Kraken is best for an active or security-focused crypto user who wants broad asset access and more control than a basic Buy button gives. I would say, it works especially well for a person who will use Kraken Pro, fund by bank, place limit orders, and make regular wallet withdrawals.
